Zodiac diet update

This is just to advise that the start date for the Zodiac diet has been pushed back to December 22nd due to overwhelming work commitments, which have resulted in my inability to get my shizzle  together and organize myself to go grocery shopping for what I'll need.  One of my amazing clients gave me a very generous gift certificate to Urban Fare - great place to shop for organic food - so I will be doing that this weekend in preparation for my 12 days of clean eating.

In three more days we hit the Winter Solstice and then the days start gradually getting longer, so we turn the corner on the northern hemisphere darkness.  Six more months to glorious sun for many hours, and long light days!  :-)

Zodiac element diet

I'm working on a "12 houses" diet that takes into account the Western Zodiac elements of earth, fire, air and water AND the Eastern Horoscope elements of wood, metal, fire, water and earth.  Apparently most people's diet is comprised of only about 12 regular foods.  So if one was to pick 12 food to eat (each food item daily) for a 12 day period,  food item choices could be optimized according to one's personal astrological profile.  There are some standing rules:  the foods must be chosen under the guidance of an astrology-savvy nutritionist - otherwise one might end up choosing pizza, doughnuts, pop, ice cream and chips if left to one's own devices.  Also, the foods must be whole, organic and gluten-free.

When is the best time to start such a diet?  The effect of this eating plan is purification of the body and mind (detoxification) and personal growth:  self discipline, clarity and respect for one's temple.  How about December 12th, the 12 Days of Christmas, when people typically abandon dietary self-discipline?

Here is my preliminary list, subject to revision.  Note that "classes" of food count as one item - in my case cruciferous vegetables, for example.

In no particular order, to be consumed daily, quantity to be determined:

* salmon
* eggs/egg whites
* chicken
* lettuce/spinach/kale
* whole grain porridge without gluten
* tomato soup
* nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews)
* unsweetened plain almond milk (in lieu of cow's milk)
* plain skim Green yogurt
* cruciferous vegetables (Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage)
* brown/wild rice
* carrots or yams**

** on alternate days:  Day 1,3,5,7,9,11 for carrots, Day 2,4,6,8,10,12 for yams

Plain coffee and tea in moderation, unlimited green tea,  and lots of water are the condoned beverages.

My plan will also include creatine and my prescription vitamins.  Not sure about protein powder, probably not since this is supposed to be a whole foods diet.  I can get enough protein from eating real food.

Eat to balance your chakras

I came across a great article in the ACE fitness professionals' bimonthly magazine, which talks about using food as medicine combined with the five element and seven chakra representations of the physical and energetic* being.  Having dabbled in Ayurvedic medicine and the energies of the subtle body during my yoga teacher training, I found this most fascinating.  Perhaps my readers will as well.

* energetic here refers to the energy fields in and around the body, it is not used as a descriptive meaning someone who moves quickly and bounces up and down a lot!  :-)
